Laid back lifestyle with character in Christchurch

There are not many big cities in New Zealand, and in South Island, there’s one big city you will never miss called Christchurch. I want to praise this city in so many ways because it makes me feel like living in my second hometown.

I come from a small city in China, but I had my time in big fancy cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but I never called them my second hometown, until Christchurch. I’m lucky that New Zealand is my first foreign country I lived in, and what’s more is that I chose Christchurch for pursuing further study two years ago. There are several characters only this city owns.

RESILIENT

After the big earthquake in 2011, everything shattered in every way, but one thing stands firm, the people in Christchurch. I love about this city is because we are resilient and believe we can get through everything, afterwards leaving a big laugh and “sweet as”. Even though it’s been 7 years after the earthquake, there are a lot to repair in the city and over the year and half living in Christchurch, all I see are the smiling faces of Christchurch folks and the resilience of believing we will get through this eventually. This city taught me to be strong and resilient.

WELCOMING

With the laid back lifestyle in Christchurch, people say hi on street all the time, and that always makes my day. Every morning I walked my way to uni, the lady who always walks dog said” Good morning” with a smile, and I said back to her. I bought a cup of flat white at the café trailer near the university library, the guy who made my coffee passed me the cup with “Enjoy and have a good day”, and I smiled back” Thanks, and you too”. I hurried to the classroom, found a seat and sat down, the classmate near me said” Hi, how are you?”, I replied” Good, hope you're having a good day, too”. See, I earned three smiles already, and it feels amazing.

Christchurch is welcoming to everyone, not only to international students, but to all people. It runs in our blood. This city shows me how to be more welcoming.

HUMBLE

Christchurch is laid back, so is the people here and it makes the city humble as well. People in Christchurch are always humble in everything because we don’t want to make others uncomfortable. When you’re standing in the checkout line of Pak N Save, people are always letting others go first. When you’re stuck in Riccarton Rd by traffic, you still think about that the cars needing to turn, and you give them the signal of giving ways. Even when we’re given a compliment because we did something good, we’re easily blushing. It’s a habit of a lifetime. This city reveals me what real humbleness is.

COLOURFUL & CLASSY

Christchurch used to be famous by its gardens, and now it’s famous by the colourful graffiti all over the city. The colours pictures on the wall exhibits more than only art, but also what Christchurch believes in - “Rise up with character”. Moreover, this laid back city is not tasteless, there are so many things to explore in this second hometown of mine.

In the Tannery Mall, there is She Universe offering the best homemade chocolate in the city. Near the store, several boutique store, cafés and a vintage cinema are scattered around, you can spend a whole day there. Port Hills is the best place for cycling and worth staying there looking at the city with relaxation. There are events happening all the time in Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu and Canterbury Museum. Christchurch is never a city with no taste, the humbleness of the city sometimes hides the inner beauty it owns, and all you need to do is polishing your eyes and discovering the beauty of this rising city. Christchurch brings me a colourful and classy life and I appreciate it.

I love this city of Christchurch, not because it’s the first and the only city I lived in New Zealand, but because I genuinely love it here. Sweet people, nice neighbourhood and beautiful scenery around makes me truly feel like home. Maybe next time, if I have to leave this city, I will be homesick all over again.

My name is Ke Shu, and everyone knows me as Danny Shu. I’m from Sichuan, China and I studied Master of Business Management in University of Canterbury in year 2016. I love it here in Christchurch because living here teaches me that there’s a different lifestyle of living that anyone of us can enjoy both life and study/work. The fresh air and natural sceneries in New Zealand is never enough to enjoy in a million times.
