Oh The Places You'll Go!

From the moment I began college, I knew that I wanted to study abroad merely to gain the diverse and personal experience. It’s so hard to believe that a few short months from now, I will be almost 8,000 miles from home, finally pursuing this dream!

Why I chose New Zealand

After making the decision to pursue a career as a Speech Language Pathologist with a minor in linguistics, it became clear that I wanted to study in an English speaking country where I could work on linguistics and the natural science requirements for this major. The adventurous spirit and breathtaking views of New Zealand have always fascinated me, and the University of Otago is a perfect fit. Not only does this university offer the courses needed to help me with my academic goals, but I will always be able to refer to the experience in New Zealand throughout my career.

My expectations

One of the key aspects of being a Speech Language Pathologist is working with all kinds of people in various situations. I will need to be culturally understanding and accommodating. I believe that by having direct experience interacting and forming relationships with the people of New Zealand, I will be able to better relate to the people I work with and therefore help them overcome the difficulties they are facing.

Not only am I excited to meet New Zealand students, but also international students who are going through some of the same challenges as I am and transitioning to a new culture. Forming connections with them will help all of us to get the most out of our experience abroad and adjust to life overseas.

Next steps

As I prepare for this journey, it is all becoming so real. Booking a thirteen-hour flight to the other side of the globe puts into perspective the adventure I am about to embark on. Going through the steps to prepare to leave like finding a place to live, getting my courses approved, has already made me learn so much. I have been in contact with so many people that are willing to help me through this process and want to see me succeed. I am so honored to have received the assistance and resources through friends, family, and my university. I would love to be able to help other students in the future that are planning a semester abroad when they work through these same scenarios.

I am counting down the days until it is time to head to the land of the kiwi and I can not wait to explore this new country and take in all that it has to offer!
