The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is one of the larger faculties within the University. The faculty places emphasis on offering a comprehensive range of subjects and research areas.

National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA)

NIDEA is a research institute based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It is New Zealand’s sole national institute of demographic and populationfocused research, and the only such unit to generate and co-ordinate New Zealand research in population studies. NIDEA researchers are nationally and internationally recognised. waikato.ac.nz/nidea


Traffic and Road Safety (TARS) Research Group

TARS Research Group has established an international reputation and is an independent provider of quality research for the Foundation for Science, Transfund, Road Safety Trust, Land Transport New Zealand (LTNZ), the New Zealand Police, ACC, and local and regional road controlling authorities. This makes TARS New Zealand’s leading centre for road safety research.
