Study options
Students who complete 3 years of successful study towards a bachelor’s degree at SHNU will be admitted to the University of Canterbury Certificate of Proficiency. Successful graduates will be admitted to the University of Canterbury Professional Master of Geospatial Science and Technology (3 years + 1 year + 1 year).
New Zealand Qualification
The Professional Master of Geospatial Science and Technology (PMGST) equips current and future geospatial professionals with experience in GIS and location data analysis, for leadership roles in government, industry, and research.
This taught Master’s offers foundational knowledge for those from a diverse range of backgrounds to acquire the knowledge, skills, and industry networks to work effectively in a geospatial environment. It will also provide development opportunities for those already in the industry.
The programme intersects relevant disciplines such as Data Science, Computer Science, and Environmental Science with spatial analysis. Students will gain skills in programming, research analysis, database management, using and applying geospatial technology, and communication.

Entry criteria

To be eligible for entry into this pathway from SHNU, students must achieve a cumulative average grade of 70% or higher during their three years of study at SHNU and achieve a minimum score of or IELTS overall 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each band, or 530 in the CET (Chinese College English Test) Band 4 or a minimum score of 500 in CET Band 6. As an alternative to the IELTS or CET, students can satisfy UC’s minimum English language requirements as set out at UC webpage.


Transfer to postgraduate level study, the second year at UC
Students who, during their first year of study in this pathway at UC, complete at least 105 points (with at least 60 points at a 200-level or higher) with an average grade of 70% (B) or higher will be given special consideration for admission into a UC Master degree listed in Schedule 1 of the agreement .
