Summary
This new degree programme aims to prepare industry ready graduates who are specialists in their chosen field of Network Engineering and Security or Software and Web Development.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Information Technology will develop a systemic and coherent understanding of Information Technology. In their chosen specialisation they will develop knowledge and understanding that they can apply in the workplace and will prepare them for IT professional body membership and certification.
The degree will be endorsed by IT Professionals New Zealand and be part of the Seoul Accord, so that graduates will have an internationally recognised qualification.
Students are taught creative and design thinking skills that reflect industry demand for more creative IT graduates.
The Bachelor in Applied Information Technology is a 360 credit programme, consisting of two specialisations: Network Engineering and Security OR Software and Web Development. A full time student is expected to complete the programme in up to 3 years (108 weeks excluding study breaks).
Year One
In this first year of 120 credits, students first complete four common 15 credit subjects before progressing to specialised subjects depending on whether they are learning Network Engineering and Security or Web and Software Development. This programme allows students to specialise much earlier than most Degrees.
Year Two
In year two students study 120 credits in their specialised fields. All courses are 15 credits at Level 6 and workplace soft skills are taught along with concepts of design thinking introduced.
Year Three
Year three of 120 credits starts with three subjects in each specialised fields, but at 20 credits. This allows for critical and creative thinking skills and design thinking.
Entry criteria
NCEA University Entrance or equivalent CIE/IB award. Note that discretionary entrance is available to students who have gained exceptional marks in level 2 NCEA. Some of the above academic requirements may be waived for students over 20 years of age.
IELTS test: Academic score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.
