Summary

This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language, who wish to increase their English language ability for general communication.

The course will focus on improving the students speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will learn through a variety of educational techniques and learning experiences that are intended to address the distinct learning needs and cultural backgrounds of students.

Students are also required to be ‘self-directed learners’ taking responsibility for their own learning and engagement in discovery and enquiry.

1. Identify both the main points and some key supporting details in a spoken conversation in an everyday situation.
2. Follow and identify the main points and some specific details of extended spoken information on a familiar topic.
3. Understand and identify the speaker’s viewpoints in spoken information on a familiar topic.
4. Understand the main points and some details of recorded audio material on familiar topics.

Listening Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Scan and locate main ideas and some supporting details in different text types.
2. Distinguish main ideas from supporting ideas in a text.
3. Utilise high frequency reading vocabulary in context.
4. Use comprehension strategies to read a range of written texts independently.
