The Master of Health Science is an advanced postgraduate qualification for health practitioners who want to further their knowledge through research to advance their career.

The Master of Health Science is an opportunity for graduates from a variety of health backgrounds to advance their scholarly and professional knowledge in an area of their interest. You study in an interprofessional and collegial learning environment, and develop research skills.

With the AUT Master of Health Science in Podiatry you develop advanced podiatry knowledge and research a topic of your interest.

The Master of Health Science in Podiatry is an advanced postgraduate qualification for podiatrists who want to further their knowledge through research to advance their career. It concludes with production of a research thesis.

What you study

You need a total of 240 points to complete the Master of Health Science in Podiatry qualification.

The paper PODY801 Advanced Podiatric Practice for the High Risk Foot (45 points) requires students to hold an annual practicing certificate (APC) with the New Zealand Podiatrists Board. The other podiatry papers are open to all qualified health professionals.

Complete the following papers

  • PODY801 Advanced Podiatric Practice for the High Risk Foot (45 points) (No mid-year intake)
  • PODY802 Advanced Therapies for the Foot and Ankle (15 points)

And select 15 points from

  • HEAL804 Advanced Case Management Practice (15 points)
  • RADY801 Ultrasound Imaging (15 points)
  • RHAB805 Concepts of Rehabilitation (15 points)
  • RHAB810 Clinical Gait Analysis (15 points)
  • RHAB817 Biomechanics (15 points)
  • RHAB818 Pain: Mechanisms and Management (15 points)
  • OR 15 points from any other paper listed in the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science (with approval)

And select 15 points from

  • HEAL811 Integrative Research (15 points)

And select 15 points from

  • HEAL808 Quantitative Research II (15 points)
  • HEAL810 Qualitative Research II (15 points)

And select 15 points from

  • HEAL812 Health Professional Practice (15 points)
  • HEAL813 Practice Reality (15 points)

  • HEAL999 Thesis (120 points)

Entry criteria

An applicant must have completed one of the following with a B grade average or higher, or equivalent:

  • Bachelor of Health Science
  • Graduate Diploma in Health Science

Alternatively, students can negotiate a research or individual pathway with the Associate Dean Academic.

Other requirements

Provide evidence of having completed an acceptable undergraduate research paper or equivalent

An applicant may be asked to provide evidence of current professional practice

An interview may be required

May be required to meet Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (HPCA Act) and Vulnerable Children’s Act (VCA Act) requirements and other relevant legislation

English Language Requirements:

IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; or equivalent; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
