The aim of the Diploma in Applied Business Level 7 is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to effectively implement and apply advanced analytical tools to business, marketing, hospitality, engineering, and healthcare issues in a dynamic global environment.

Engineering is one of the world’s largest industries, with job opportunities in almost every country. New Zealand is not any different. Its fast growing economy and high government investment in infrastructure, put engineering managers in very high demand in various aspects of the industry, covering energy, telecommunications, water and transport. NZIE’s Engineering Management course has been created to attend the high demand presented by NZ’s engineering industry.

NZIE’s Diploma in Applied Business Level 7 in Engineering Management is a modern, comprehensive and practical programme designed in 2016 to introduce engineers, architects, scientists, and computer scientists graduates to frontline, leadership and management in the engineering industry.

By studying engineering management course you will develop the professional skills required by the next generation of Engineering Managers seeking a career in chemical, environmental, electrical, electronics, construction, geotechnical, instrument and electrical, materials, mechanical, industrial, mining, petroleum, production, structural and transport specialities.

The engineering management course prepares you to resolve issues in engineering projects, deal with issues raised in project teams involved in the development of engineering products and applications. Alongside, you will also develop an ability to use analytical methods, tools and processes to add business value for all concerned stakeholders. Upon completion of this course, you will gain knowledge and skills to manage and complete engineering projects in a successful manner.

In addition to developing skills in management, marketing planning and control, research methods of engineering and engineering project management, the programme includes a 12-week internship within New Zealand’s dynamic Engineering industries.


NZIE already has study pathways established with a number of other New Zealand based institutions and universities including Massey University, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland Institute of Studies, and Unitec, and with Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia.
The Diploma in Applied Business provides a number of further study options for advanced learning at Postgraduate Level. If students wish to further their studies, they can speak with their Programme Leader who can provide this information

Alternatively, graduates of the Diploma in Applied Business may choose to seek employment in New Zealand on programme completion and can get advice and support from NZIE’s Student Career Service THINK RECRUIT.

Entry criteria

Students must have completed:

  • NZQF level 5, or
  • a 3-year Diploma, or
  • a Degree,

In a field related to the applicant’s chosen major for the Advanced Management, International Marketing, and Hospitality Management majors; in an engineering discipline for the Engineering Management major; or in a health care-related discipline for the Healthcare Management major.

In lieu of a formal qualification, applicants may apply if they have at least three years suitable work experience. Under this criteria it is expected the work experience be directly related to the field the applicant wishes to major. The suitability of the applicant will be assessed and decided by the NZIE Academic Board.

Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to have an IELTS academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5, or TOEFL (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE), or TOEFL (iBT) score of 60 (with writing score of 18), or Cambridge English Examinations FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill, or NZCEL Level 4, with the academic endorsement, or Pearson Test of English (Academic) with an Academic score of 50, or City & Guilds IESOL, B2 communicator or with a score of 66. Results must come from one test conducted in the last 2 years.
