Summary

The Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering Fundamentals is a pre-requisite course if you want to have a career with the RNZAF. As a graduate you will have the base knowledge and experience to choose your preferred career pathway of aircraft engineering specialisation. As a graduate, you may also choose to train in another field of engineering, as many of the skills are transferable to other areas such as motor, electrical and mechanical engineering.

NMIT is New Zealand's first approved New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZCAA) Part 147 Certified Maintenance Training Organisation.

Career opportunities & pathways

Graduates will have the base knowledge and experience to choose their preferred career pathway of aircraft engineering specialisation. They will be able to:

  • apply for entry to RNZAF aircraft engineering trades, or
  • apply to continue Aeronautical Engineering training with NMIT training on Certificate in Aeronautical Maintenance Engineering.
  • apply for employment in airport ground services.
  • Graduates may also choose to train in another field of engineering, as many of the skills are transferable to other areas such as motor, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Entry criteria

Applicants under 20 years
• Have successfully completed NCEA Level 2 or above, or equivalent.

Applicants 20 years and over
• Have successfully completed NCEA Level 2 or above, or equivalent.

• Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of academic qualifications.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those students whose first language is not English should have:

An international English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic band score of at least 6.0 (with at least 5.5 in each component) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

Other Requirements

To be eligible to be considered for this course, students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be cleared by the New Zealand Police Vetting System

In addition to the above entry requirements, international students are required to provide the following:

  • A written statement detailing why they want to study Aeronautical Engineering, and why they wish to do so in New Zealand;
  • One industry-related written reference, which includes all contact details of the referee.
