Summary

The purpose of this qualification is to provide professional knowledge and business management skills to enable graduates to work in management roles across a range of hospitality businesses.

Graduates can demonstrate a detailed understanding of accounting, budgeting and financial management. Practicum assessments, completed as part of hospitality businesses placements, enable graduates to develop a range of skills specific to the business environment. These include development of training and mentoring templates for junior staff, design and execution of social media event and marketing campaigns, analysis of business costs, risks and future business development strategies.

This qualification establishes standards of professional practice for hospitality managers in a range of hospitality environments.

The programme consists of five modules and with four modules including work-based placement of practicum. There will be 20 hours per week of face to face delivery. This equates to 5 sessions of 4 hour lectures and workshops over three days.

In addition students will complete the Practicum Work Placement will take placed with an approved host employer for 5 hours over 35 weeks (175 hours).

Career opportunities

Graduates will be able to work autonomously in a range of dynamic hospitality environments with responsibilities for the management, development and learning of others.

Graduates will be suitable for junior management of department head roles across a range of hospitality sectors including kitchens, restaurants, bars, cafes, accommodation, catering or hotels.

Roles may include restaurant, café or hotel managers, guest relations, marketing coordinators, human resource coordinators, departmental co-ordinators, team and shift supervisors and hotel and restaurant operational roles.

Pathways to Further Study

This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality Management (Level 5) and may lead on to further study towards a degree in Hospitality Management or a related discipline.

  • New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management Level 6
  • WSET Award in Spirits Level 3

Entry criteria

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Completed Certificate in Hospitality & Event Management, Level 5
  • Upper intermediate English: IELTS 6 or equivalent for international students
  • Valid visa for international students
  • Attend an interview in person or by telephone
  • Laptop with Microsoft Office 2003 or later
