Summary

Become a competent employee in supervisory, trainee and junior management roles by developing industry relevant knowledge and skills. This programme is ideal if you are targeting a career in hospitality management or if you already have front-line hospitality service experience but are keen to take your career to the next level and progress into management.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The first half of the programme involves classroom based hospitality management modules, while in the second half you will expand your hospitality operations knowledge and skills through either a fulltime internship (eligibility criteria applies) or campus based modules.

Semester one:

  • Operational activities impacting management decisions within rooms division operations
  • Role and responsibilities of human resources staff in the employee life cycle
  • Utilising financial management practices, tools and in hospitality operations
  • Planning for contemporary events

Semester two campus based option:

  • Resource management and procurement in hospitality operations
  • Impact of the external business environment
  • Planning operational development for a specific hospitality business case

Semester two internship option:

  • Undertake a full-time internship in the hospitality sector
  • Complete a portfolio of work based on the internship experience and learnings

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS WILL I GAIN?

New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management (Level 6)

Further study

Graduates of this course are eligible to:

  • Progress to the Diploma in Tourism & Hotel Management (Level 7), or another hospitality-related field

Bachelor pathway

  • Complete the final 1.5 years of AUT University's Bachelor of International Hospitality
  • Complete the final 1.5 years of Ara Institute of Canterbury's Bachelor of International Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Entry criteria

Students must:

  • You need to be 16 or older and have completed the Diploma in Hospitality Management Level 5.
  • If you are an international student, you also need to have completed high school and have an English level of 6 IELTS or equivalent with no band score lower than 5.5.
