Summary

The Master of Science (MSc) normally takes 12-18 months of full-time study to complete. The degree requires 180 points, which is made up of 120 points in taught papers and a 60-point dissertation (research project).

Molecular and Cellular Biology

Molecular and Cellular Biology is an interdisciplinary field combining biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and physiology to study how cells function at the molecular level.

Molecular and Cellular Biology explores the complex mechanisms that coordinate the essential systems that define a living cell and that allow cells to have differentiated properties. This knowledge is used to look at how unicellular and multicellular organisms function and how it can provide researchers with crucial insights into the basis of human and animal diseases.

By studying a major in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Waikato, you will:

  • Gain a detailed knowledge of the molecules of life and the relationship between the structure and function of biomolecules;
  • Understand the subcellular and cellular organisation of eukaryotic cells and the key catabolic, anabolic and metabolic cellular processes that occur;
  • Learn how to distinguish between the genetic organisation and gene expression of viruses, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes, and describe the mechanisms of inheritance and evolution;
  • Be able to describe the anatomy and physiology of mammals and other organisms, and the mechanisms behind certain diseases.

Along with relevant subject knowledge, you will also gain a range of critical thinking skills, and practical learning experiences from our range of challenging and innovative papers and programmes. There is a significant laboratory component to the Molecular and Cellular Biology major, where you will learn relevant skills and be exposed to some of the latest techniques available.

Molecular and Cellular Biology graduates find employment in New Zealand working in industry or for government related institutes and agencies, while others go on to graduate study or travel overseas. Future employers of graduates include local and national government bodies (e.g. Waikato DHB), Crown Research Institutes (e.g. Plant and Food, NIWA and AgResearch), analytical laboratories and a range of primary industries.

Note: Depending on the focus of your research, you could complete that 60-point portion of your MSc in Tauranga campus. Facilities there include the Coastal Marine Field Station.

The taught portion of the MSc, which is worth 120 points, is based in Hamilton only.

Entry criteria

Admission requires a relevant Bachelors level qualification or equivalent.

If you do not hold the appropriate qualifications required for direct entry, you may be eligible to apply for a pathway via a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma.

You also need to meet an English language entry requirement as follows:

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall (no less than 6.0 in writing); iBT (internet based) TOEFL - 90 with a score of 21 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic - Overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50; Waikato Pathways - successful completion of Level 8 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in English Language (CAEL) programme.

Note: To provide flexibility to students during COVID-19 who are affected by the closure of testing centres, and who wish to start their studies in 2021, the University of Waikato will accept the following alternative tests until further notice:

  • IELTS Indicator (this is an online version of the regular IELTS test)
  • TOEFL iBT Home (Plus) (this is an online version of the regular TOEFL test)
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) score of 110 for postgraduate programmes.

The University of Waikato will also accept IELTS and iBT TOEFL test results completed in the last 3 years, rather than the usual 2 years until further notice.
