Summary

Make the move into higher-level study with a degree that combines the variety and structure of classroom-based courses with opportunities for research.

You'll be able to expand your expertise in one of nine subjects while taking advantage of the flexibility to study courses across a range of commerce disciplines.

You can also study a Master of Commerce by thesis if you have a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours or Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce.

Build on your Bachelor's degree to enhance your career options in business, management and government with advanced study at Victoria Business School.

Coursework option:

This 180-point programme will take you three to four trimesters of full-time study. If you’re studying part time it usually takes six trimesters.

Thesis option:

This 120-point programme will take you 12 months to complete full time, or one and a half to two years part time. You must take at least 90 points of research. This means you'll complete a research thesis made up of a literature review, data collection and analysis, and your findings. A thesis is usually 30,000–40,000 words.

Workload

If you are studying full time, you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year.

Doing a PhD

If you're thinking of doing a PhD after completing your Master's degree, you're recommended to include the 90-point thesis in your course of study.

International Business:

Coursework - For this programme you'll need to:

Complete a total of 180 points, of which:

40 points must be at 500 level

30 points must be research-based courses

For this subject you'll need to:

Have previously completed Dynamic Strategy and Structure in International Business (IBUS 305) and Managing and Communicating Across Cultures (IBUS 312)

Complete six courses:

Research Methodology A (FCOM 401)

Research Methodology B (FCOM 421)

Advanced International Business (IBUS 401)

Two further courses from IBUS 402–408

One further course from IBUS 401–489 or another approved 400-level course

Complete Thesis in International Business (IBUS 592) or

The following three courses:

Research Project (FCOM 430)

IBUS 510

IBUS 531

For this programme you'll need to:

Complete a total of 120 points, of which

40 points must be at 500 level

30 points must be research-based courses

All courses must come from those listed for the BCom or MCom

Subject requirements

In addition to the programme requirements, for this subject you'll need to:

Complete either Thesis (IBUS 591) or

Thesis in International Business (IBUS 592) and further approved courses worth 30 points at 400-level or above

Proof of English proficiency

To be accepted into this programme you will need to meet one of the following:

IELTS: minimum overall score of 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.0

TOEFL: minimum score of 90 for the internet-based test with a minimum of 20 in writing

Pearson Test of English: minimum score of 58 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 50)

EPP: minimum final scores of 4,4,5,5
