Programme highlights

Learn intermediate English language skills, whether you're a local or international student, and apply them to familiar topics.

Begin to develop the skills to understand the main points in conversations and keep a conversation going.

Read and understand a range of texts and write paragraphs, with reasonable accuracy.

This qualification allows Aotearoa New Zealand community, employers and educational institutions to recognise the level at which you can use English for general purposes.

Programme structure

The programme will consist of four compulsory courses, worth 15 credits each.

For the General Qualifier:

General Speaking and Listening 1

To listen and understand main ideas in oral texts and participate in spoken interactions on familiar topics.

General Speaking and Listening 2

To listen and understand main ideas in oral texts and participate in spoken interactions on reasonably familiar topics.

General Reading and Writing 1

To read and understand a range of texts on familiar topics and to write texts on familiar topics.

General Reading and Writing 2

To read and understand a range of texts on reasonably familiar topics and to write texts on reasonably familiar topics.

Further training or study

This Certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2) and can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) (Applied)

Entry criteria

Applicants must meet the following entry criteria:

  • Have New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2); or
  • Provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 4.5; or
  • A level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mid B1; or
  • Vital English results within the range of 50 – 69.

IELTS test: General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE); TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14); Cambridge English Examinations: B2 First or B2 First for Schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill; OET at Grade C in all sub-tests; Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36.
