Programme highlights

Improve your English language skills.

This programme is for local and international students. You need to have a basic understanding of the English language.

You will learn how to get better at speaking English. You will also learn how to read simple pieces of writing and write in clear sentences.

Programme structure

Students complete the following 15 credit courses:

Speaking and Listening 1

To understand and use basic language in familiar situations to engage in routine tasks, social encounters and exchanges of information with emerging fluency and accuracy.

Speaking and Listening 2

To understand and use basic language in familiar situations to engage in routine tasks, social encounters and exchanges of information with emerging fluency and accuracy.

Reading and Writing 1

To read and understand simple texts on routine topics and identify specific predictable information in short texts.

Reading and Writing 2

To read and understand simple texts on familiar topics and identify specific predictable information in short texts.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this certificate will have the English language skills to work in positions that require simple face-to-face interpersonal communication, an understanding of simple spoken and written instructions and descriptions and completion of simple forms relevant to workplace contexts.

Further training or study

NZ Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 3)

Entry criteria

Applicants must meet the following entry criteria:

Have New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) Or

A level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) A2 Or

Vital English results within the range of 35 – 49.

There is no IELTS equivalent for this level.

Selection Requirements

Applicants will be selected in order of completed applications received.
