Summary

Prepare to face the world of broadcast and online news and current affairs head-on with our internationally renowned journalism degree.

Our Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications degree specialising in journalism is a highly practical programme providing you with the skills and theory to break news stories and be actively involved with the production of news for radio, television or online media.

Early in your studies you'll gain a strong grounding in broadcasting and communications theory, writing and researching news bulletins for our radio station. You'll also report TV news stories for broadcast and online.

In close collaboration with our media partners, our programme has been designed to produce graduates who will meet the needs of the industry. Our 24-week industry internship gives you more real-world experience, builds your industry contacts and gives you a real edge when it comes to securing your first job.

Programme structure

To complete this Degree you are required to complete 360 credits. To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

As a graduate of this programme you will be ready to establish a career as a journalist, working in newsrooms throughout the country as a reporter, digital editor, presenter, producer or researcher.

STUDY PATHWAYS

Use this qualification as a foundation for further postgraduate study in media and communications.

Entry criteria

University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. To qualify in 2020 you will need: NCEA Level 3; Three subjects - at Level 3, made up of: 12 credits in each of three approved subjects (this applies to 2020 only. In other years, 14 credits in each of three approved subjects is required); Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing; Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required).

Note: If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (eg International Baccalaureate, Cambridge examination) should contact us for requirements.

Alternative requirements

If you show that you have equivalent skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, you may be able to gain alternative entry.

Note: The number of courses you have to complete for this qualification may be reduced where you have relevant credits from previous study, or evidence of similar learning or experience in the workplace.

English language requirements:

IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5

SPEAKING – 5.5
READING - 5.5
WRITING - 5.5
LISTENING - 5.5

TOEFL (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)

TOEFL (iBT) - Score of 60 or higher (with a writing score of 18)

Cambridge English Qualifications - B2 First, or B2 First for schools, or C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill

PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
