This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language, attending NZQA approved programmes delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2. This qualification allows Aotearoa New Zealand community, employers and educational institutions to recognise the level at which the graduate can use English for general, workplace or academic purposes. IESOL is aimed at:

  • Young people or adults attending an English course
  • Students learning English as part of their school or college curriculum
  • People needing English for their everyday or working life
  • Learners who require externally recognised certification of their levels in English
  • Students who require a series of graded examinations to move up the ladder of proficiency.

Entry criteria

Be a minimum of 14 years of age prior to the commencement of the programme

Must meet New Zealand Immigration requirement

Students have an IELTS score of 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0 or an equivalent test. Or students have had their language skills assessed to be at this level range to be eligible for the programme.

For student who does not meet requirement 3 above, NZCB will use their own placement test and a one on-one interview to assess and determine a student’s entry level.

English Proficiency Outcomes

TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)

TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 20)

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: FCE with a pass at Grade C or CAE with a score of 47

Pearson Test of English (Academic): PToE (Academic) score of 42

City & Guilds IESOL: B2 Communicator with a score of 42
