To ensure optimal peer-to-peer learning, Media Design School determines each Postgraduate Design cohort by carefully managing the participant mix. Postgraduate Design participants typically have 6 plus years of professional experience, are recognised as having significant potential. Most applicants have a high degree of specific design knowledge. Others come from diverse backgrounds but have a strong interest in how design can be applied to their specific field and interests.

Course Components

During the Master of Design, you will undertake the following course work:

  • Two (30 credits each), NZQF Level 8.
  • Master Proposal (15 credits), NZQF Level 9.
  • Master Project (45 credits), NZQF Level 9.
  • One (not-for-credit) Postgraduate Toolbox component.

Master of Design Students will complete two of the following components:

  • PGD001 Design Research: Connecting Texts, Deciphering Context
  • PGD002 Interdisciplinary Design Project: Emerging Contexts
  • PGD003 Contemporary Design Issue: Creative Futures
  • PGD004 Special Topic Project: Creative Entrepreneurship
  • PGD005 Special Topic Project: Design and Economies
  • PGD006 Interdisciplinary Design Theories: Dialogues

In addition to the above two components, there are two mandatory Master of Design components:

  • PGD007 Master Project Proposal
  • PGD008 Master Project

Entry criteria

Open to applicants with a high degree of specific design knowledge. Applicants who come from diverse backgrounds but have a strong interest in how design can be applied to their specific field and interests.

You'll also need to prove you have sufficient English language skills in order to complete this course. We'll be looking for Academic IELTS 6.5 overall with no band score less than 6.0, or equivalent.
