Suitable for applicants wanting to build on undergraduate study of Early Childhood and progress on a pathway to postgraduate study and research.

The programme comprises 120 points from courses listed below including a 30-point research paper.

  • 90 points from the schedule for the BEd(Hons) or equivalent and
  • Compulsory research project (EDUC 489)

Learn about education from many angles—from early childhood development to youth issues to politics in education. Discover the fascinating relationships between education, culture and society, and examine how these have changed over time.

You’ll gain the knowledge and skills to understand and unpack our education system. Take a critical view of the way we educate our young people and study education theory, practice and policy issues.

Study Education as a general academic subject or include it in your studies on your way to becoming a teacher. While it doesn't qualify you to be a teacher, it gives you valuable insights into education and helps prepare you for graduate-level Teacher Education study.

Entry criteria

Applicants must satisfy the following:

  • BEd (Tchg) EC degree, or
  • BA (major in Early Childhood Studies), or
  • An equivalent or similar qualification at the discretion of the Associate Dean
  • Accepted by the Associate Dean as capable of completion

This qualification builds on undergraduate study from a BEd(Tchg)EC or BA major in Early Childhood Studies, to enable students to engage in advanced, specialised study in early childhood education, as well as providing a pathway into postgraduate study and research.

English language requirements

  • IELTS overall band of 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5
  • TOEFL 80 on the internet-based test
  • A minimum of three ratings of 4 and one rating of 3 in the Victoria University of Wellington English Proficiency Programme (EPP) test
  • Pearson Test of English: score of 50 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 42).
