Summary

Achieve the academic requirements for Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) or Chartered Accountant (CA) membership with this internationally-recognised specialised accounting degree of excellence.

This qualification has Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) accreditation and is ideal if you are studying towards becoming a Chartered Accountant or Associated Chartered Accountant. Employment opportunities for Accountants are good due to strong demand for accounting services from a wide range of businesses and individuals, and this demand is expected to keep rising.

Incorporating case studies, workplace-based or focused assignments, and a major industry project for professional accounting and associated research project; this hands-on qualification has industry experience and connections at its core. This will enable you to gain the work-ready skills that employers are looking for and to move into the professional accounting environment successfully.

You will also gain core business knowledge in management, commercial law, marketing, business computing, economics, accounting, communication, and business, heritage, culture and sustainability.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, you will be in the perfect position to then complete the final professional requirements needed to achieve full CA or ACA membership with CAANZ.

Your workload

If studying at our Auckland International Campus

You will be expected to spend about 38 hours per week (or 300 hours per study block) on your course work. This includes both scheduled class time and self-directed study. Some of these hours may be spent in a workplace gaining hands-on experience and developing important industry and business connections.

If studying at our Dunedin Campus

In your first year, course work will require approximately 40 hours of both directed and self-directed study per week. Class sizes are small, allowing for more one-on-one teaching in a supportive learning environment. As you progress through the qualification, directed study hours are reduced as your study becomes much more self-directed.

Bridging options

The New Zealand Diploma in Business (offered at our Dunedin campus) provides a sound initial understanding of business operations and therefore provides a good pathway into this programme. Other programmes of study may also provide bridging options.

Next steps to becoming a CA or ACA with CAANZ

Upon successful completion of this academic programme as specified by CAANZ, graduates will be required to complete the following professional requirements to become a CA:

  • three years of approved practical experience under the guidance of a CA mentor
  • the Chartered Accountants Programme.

Upon successful completion of this academic programme as specified by Chartered Accountants ANZ, graduates will be required to complete the following professional requirements to become an ACA:

  • two years of approved practical experience under the guidance of a CA mentor
  • the Professional Ethics Module.
