Summary

This qualification aims to provide students with both theoretical and practical skills necessary to gain employment as an Engineering Technician in the mechanical engineering field. Engineering Technicians are generally involved in design and operations.

This qualification is an International Dublin Accord qualification under the accreditation of Engineering New Zealand.

Graduates will be able to:

  • apply engineering theory to practice working within well-defined engineering problems relevant to their specialist field of mechanical engineering
  • use their engineering knowledge to make informed problem solving decisions in mechanical engineering and to implement these decisions
  • identify, evaluate and manage risks within well-defined engineering problems relevant to their field of mechanical engineering

Graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering will be able to study towards a technologist degree such as Bachelor of Engineering Technology, or a professional engineering qualification such as Bachelor of Engineering

Mechanical Engineering Cadetship, Engineering Technician, Engineering Design Assistant, Project Management, Engineering Management, Engineering Related Sales, AutoCAD Draughtsman, AutoCAD Operator.

Further Study Options

Diploma in Engineering Practice (NZDEP) which can be gained in the workplace, or degree level study.

Entry criteria

  • NCEA Level 2 including at least 12 credits in Maths, or
  • Equivalent knowledge, life skills, work experience or study

Students must also meet the English language proficiency requirements as below:

  • IELTS 6.0 (academic) overall with no less than 5.5 in any band
  • TOEFL (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
  • TOEFL (iBT) score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)
  • FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests.
  • PToE (Academic) score of 50
  • City & Guilds IESOL B2 Communicator with a score of 66
  • NZCEL Level 4 with an Academic endorsement
  • LanguageCert - C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS
