Summary

The New Zealand International Commercial Pilot Academy is accredited to provide the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Aeroplane) (General Aviation) Level 5 by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under section 250 of the Education Act 1989.

This course is a Level 5, 243 credit qualification which is 84 weeks in duration. The course includes either a Single or Multi Engine Instrument Rating as well as a Night Rating. This course would ideally suit those students that wish to pursue a career as a Commercial Pilot, Flight Instructor or as a pathway to build hours towards an Airline Career.

Aim

To provide the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with type and instrument ratings, entitling the holder to legally operate an aircraft in New Zealand for commercial purposes. And to introduce Maintenance Control for maintenance of aircraft, as an option for other ancillary roles in the Aviation industry.

Content

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) theory subjects including;

Air law, flight navigation general, meteorology, principles of flight and aircraft performance (Aeroplane), general aircraft technical knowledge (aeroplane), and human factors.

Flying practical and flight tests for CPL covering;

• Knowledge of ground examination subjects as above, and
• Knowledge of the privileges & limitations of a CPL, and
• Technical and operational knowledge relevant to the aircraft type used in flight tests, and
• Competence to operate the aircraft, and
• Control of the aircraft at all times ensuring successful outcome of procedure or manoeuvre is never in doubt, and
• Competence in radiotelephony.

Single or Multi Engine Instrument rating (SEIR or MEIR) including;

• Air law, navigation & flight planning, instruments & navigation aids
• Competency for night flying instrument flying for night flying privilege
• Knowledge of the acceptance and carriage of dangerous goods by air.
• Type rating for aircraft under 5700kg
• Maintenance Control incorporating study towards the National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Maintenance Control)
• Electives include GPS Rating and Endorsement, ILS Endorsement, Basic Gas Turbine, ATPL Human Factors and Air Operations.

Outcome

Graduates will be qualified commercial pilots, able to exercise the privileges provided for by NZCAA in New Zealand, safely load and carry dangerous goods by air, and understand Maintenance Control as according to CAA requirements.

Entry criteria

To be eligible for entry to this programme, applicants must;

• Successfully complete the ADAPT Trainee Pilot Pre-screening Test
• Hold NCEA Level 2 or Trade Cert Level 4 or Equivalent
• Hold an Aviation Class 1 medical certificate
• Meet the 'Fit & Proper Person' requirements of NZCAA
• Be competent in spoken English to meet NZCAA requirements
• Provide driving history report and Ministry of Justice report
• Provide 3 references (2 oral, 1 written)
• Provide a letter outlining your interest
• Attend an interview at NZICPA
• Complete an internal Maths and English Entry Test

In addition, international students must;

• Be 18 years of age or over
• Have an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher.
