This programme will provide students with a broad understanding of the core concepts and skills in information technology, including technical support, information systems, integration design, and software development.

This programme is the first semester of the Diploma and Degree if students decide to progress to further study.

Career/Further Opportunities

?Graduates of this programme will have the skills and knowledge to work in a wide variety of entry level positions in the IT industry, and will be capable of applying the fundamentals of current and emerging concepts and practice in IT. Additionally, graduates who go on to further learning towards other New Zealand Diplomas may be granted credit recognition for this Certificate qualification. They may only need to complete their learning for the additional skills and knowledge required, for example, for the New Zealand Diploma in Information Technology Technical Support (Level 5) qualification, or they may go on to study at under-graduate degree level. It is recognised that the scope of the programme outcomes will match the requirements for IT support roles at Tier 1.

Entry criteria

Based on your school achievement (secondary school study)

  • 40 credits at NCEA Level 2; including 10 literacy credits at NCEA Level 2 and 10 numeracy credits at NCEA Level 1;
  • Or a recognised equivalent.
  • Based on study completed after school (tertiary study)
  • Completed a relevant course at NZQF Level 3;
  • Or a recognised equivalent.

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 5.0; or

  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • TOEFL Paper-based Test (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
