Are you passionate about the environment and want to help protect it for future generations? You can make a real difference in the world with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environment. Whether you want to update your skills or take your first steps in caring for the environment, our range of environment qualifications will help you. You can begin your studies with a certificate or diploma in environmental management or environment and sustainability and the courses you study can be credited towards this degree or our double major in communication and environment.

What you will learn

When you achieve this qualification you will be able to:

  • recognise and analyse the causes of environmental problems facing New Zealand and the global community
  • apply environmental principles and legislation to practical situations involving the protection and use of natural resources
  • evaluate policy and management approaches to resolve environmental problems
  • contribute to identifying and implementing effective actions to achieve sustainable environmental outcomes.

Career opportunities

This qualification will prepare you for a career in central or local government, public and private organisations, and working in planning, resource and environmental management, research, consultancy or environmental education.

You can study this programme part-time if you’re an international student living in New Zealand or overseas. If you’re living in New Zealand you will need to be in paid employment with a valid work permit.

Entry criteria

You must be at least 17 years of age at the start of the programme and have one of the following:

  • New Zealand University Entrance
  • Passes in New Zealand certificate/diploma qualifications/courses considered appropriate by the programme leader
  • An overseas qualification assessed to be equivalent to either of the above by the programme leader.

IELTS test – a score of 6 (Academic) with no band score lower than 5.5

Cambridge English Qualifications - B2 First, or B2 First for Schools, or C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill.
