Studying in New Zealand gives you a first-class academic education combined with the practical, hands-on learning that teaches you to think critically. High-quality tertiary education is available throughout the country, and all eight of our universities are ranked in the top 100 universities in the world in one or more subjects in the 2016 QS World University Rankings.
You can start your studies at the beginning of the first semester (February-June) or the second semester (July-November), or enrol in a short-term summer programme (June-July). To find out how to apply to study in New Zealand, talk to an advisor in the study abroad office at your US institution.
If you’re a PhD student accepted for enrolment at a New Zealand university, you’ll pay the same fees as domestic students. It’s just one of the many benefits in New Zealand’s PhD package for international students.
US students studying at a New Zealand university, institute of technology and polytechnic or private training establishment for a semester or a year can apply for a Generation Study Abroad Excellence (US$500) or Travel (US$2,000) Award.
The Go Overseas scholarship competition, run in partnership with Education New Zealand, offers one student a year a US$15,000 full tuition scholarship to study abroad in New Zealand for a semester.
Students from US institutions can apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program to receive up to US$5,000 to study or intern in New Zealand as part of a partnership agreement between Education New Zealand and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Tertiary institutions may have specified housing for international students, which could be halls of residence or flats (apartments).
Students usually have their own room in a dorm or house, and share a living space and kitchen with several others. University residence halls are usually just a short walk to campus or, in larger cities, a short ride on public transit. You may even have a nearby Kiwihost to act as a local guide.
Whether you’re into sport, the arts, shopping, culture or nature, there will always be new and exciting experiences to enjoy in New Zealand.
Explore our spectacular beaches, mountains, lakes and walking trails, or try an adrenalin-fuelled adventure sport like snowboarding, bungy jumping or whitewater rafting. You can visit art galleries, museums, theatres and cinemas, discover our unique Māori culture and heritage, and hang out at cool cafes and restaurants with your new Kiwi friends.
You’ll also have many opportunities to join student clubs and organisations.
