Brazilian Student is Flying High

For Diana Granha Piati, studying in New Zealand is the key to a future where she could combine her two passions – running her own business and flying planes.

Diana flew executive jets back home in Vitoria, Brazil. In November 2016, she moved to Auckland to study for a New Zealand Diploma in Business and Enterprise Management.

She chose New Zealand because her sister was already living here. “She told me it was a very good place to live and study, with lots of opportunities,” says Diana.

Although Diana already had a business degree, she decided to study for a diploma at the Abacus Institute of Studies to learn more about the New Zealand way of doing business. She hopes to work here after finishing the one-year course.

As well as studying, Diana is working to have her pilot’s licence recognised in New Zealand.

“I would love to start a new business in New Zealand and be a pilot here as well. That is my dream,” she says.

Diana has a black belt in karate, and joining a karate academy has helped her make new friends in Auckland.

“I’ve met lots of people of different ages and backgrounds. It’s a good way to meet Kiwis, and everyone is so lovely and kind,” she says.

She is putting her black belt to good use by working in security at The Warehouse, and is also a part-time tutor for business students.

Diana says moving to New Zealand has already given her new skills, greater confidence and more self-knowledge.

“It’s not easy to drop everything you have back home and start again somewhere new,” says Diana.

“But if you have the courage to take that step, you’ll find yourself doing things you never imagined yourself doing.

“You’ll open your eyes and your mind and see that you are capable of doing anything.”
