Wanaka Helicopters Ltd.

Private Training Establishment

Why train with Wanaka Helicopters?

Wanaka Helicopters has been operating in Wanaka since 1992 and has earned a ‘world class’ reputation for training helicopter pilots.  There are several pathways to becoming a helicopter pilot:

  • Private training to Private Pilot Licence usiing Guimball Cabri G2 and Robinson R22 helicopters
  • Private training to Commercial Pilot Licence using light two-seat aircraft and larger aircraft including Robinson R44 Raven II and Eurocopter AS350 'Squirrel' Turbine aircraft
  • Commercial specialties including Advanced Mountain, Advanced Sling-load, FCCC, BFR, and more
  • Ministry of Education approved Private Tertiary Enterprise delivering the national Diploma in Aviation (General, Helicopter) levels 5 and 6

Reasons why people train with us:

  • Exceptional flying environment:
    • Quiet uncontrolled airspace and therefore no flight delays

    • The controlled airspace of Queenstown is only ten minutes flight time away
    • Southern Alps location –  we are the home of mountain flight training in New Zealand
  • Instructors with a wealth of commercial and instructional experience. Our owner /Director Simon Spencer-Bower has been training helicopter pilots since 1980 and was awarded the HAI instructor of the year 2015 – https://youtu.be/YAY8gHVYAag . Over 500 pilots trained to date.
