“In Germany, people want you to be the best and don’t care about anything else. Here in New Zealand, they want you to be the best you can be.”
Stina enjoys the ease of living in New Zealand and its relaxed pace of life. She often takes time out to explore the nearby Otago Peninsula, which is rich in wildlife such as penguins, fur seals, sea lions, dolphins and albatross.
She is now in the second year of a Master of Science in Marine Science degree at the University of Otago in Dunedin, researching two species of fish - blue cod and sea perch - to discover how understanding the species’ individual differences help protect against overfishing.
“I feel much freer here, and more supported. I get great support from my supervisor and from the whole marine science department,” says Stina.
