Student Visa Checklist

This checklist will help you get your student visa application right the first time.

After securing an offer from one of New Zealand’s internationally-renowned education providers, the next thing you’ll need to sort out is your student visa (if you need one*).

This whole process can be daunting but to help make things a little easier, Immigration New Zealand, in partnership with Education New Zealand, has created a checklist to guide you through the process.

Available on the Immigration NZ’s website, the First-time Student Visa application checklist is a step-by-step guide to help you complete your application. Following the checklist will help you to avoid missing information in your application which can cause delays in it being processed.

Not only does the checklist take you through what needs to be included in your application, it also tells you what kind of evidence you need to support it. For example:

  • a cover letter
  • work/employment history
  • evidence of funds.

If you are from China, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka or Viet Nam, you will find country-specific information about what is accepted and not accepted as evidence.

Tip: You should apply for your student visa at least eight weeks before you want to travel. The earliest you can apply is four months before you intend to travel.

*If you’re travelling to New Zealand for less than 3 months (or 6 months if you’re from the UK) you may need a different kind of visa or no visa at all. Read more about student visas, the NZeTA, and other visa types.
