Many overseas students choose Northland because of its warm climate. It’s known in New Zealand as the ‘winterless north’. The area has beautiful beaches, forests, lakes and rivers. Māori culture is rich and vibrant.

Whangarei, Northland’s largest centre, means ‘cherished harbour’ and the small coastal town certainly lives up to its name.

Northland is a popular holiday destination for Aucklanders who fish, dive and sail in the stunning Bay of Islands. Take a cruise and you’ll almost always see dolphins.

Northland is where European history in New Zealand began and there are fascinating historic Māori and European settler sites to visit.
Main centres:

Kerikeri, Paihia, Whangarei

Ahipara, Cape Reinga, Dargaville, Okaihau, Kaikohe, Omapere/Opononi, Kaitaia, Rawene, Kohukohu, Tutukaka
